How to Choose a T-Shirt: Fit, Fabric Weight, and Print Care
A good graphic gets your attention. The fit decides whether the shirt stays in your rotation. Before choosing your next tee, take a few minutes with one you already enjoy wearing. It is a better starting point than assuming every brand's large fits the same way.
Compare measurements, not just size names
Lay your favorite tee flat without stretching it. Measure its width across the chest and its length from the shoulder area to the hem. Then read the new shirt's size guide carefully: some charts give garment measurements, while others give body measurements. Only compare measurements taken the same way.
Think about the whole shape. You may like room through the body but a closer sleeve, or a shorter hem with more shoulder space. Check the fit description and product images alongside the chart. If you sit between sizes, choose based on the fit you want and the item's measurements rather than an automatic size-up rule.
Understand what fabric weight tells you
Fabric weight is often listed in grams per square meter, or g/m², and ounces per square yard. It describes the weight of a given area of fabric. It does not tell you everything about softness, stretch, construction, or fit.
A lighter tee can feel less bulky under a hoodie. A heavier tee can have a more substantial drape. Neither is automatically the better shirt for every person or every day. Choose for the feel you like and how you plan to wear it.
For a concrete example, the Drive Pro tee lists a fabric weight of 4.2 oz/yd², or 142 g/m², and side-seamed construction. Its product description also distinguishes solid cotton colors from heather blends. Read the details for the color you select; do not assume every shirt in a collection uses the same fabric.
Give printed shirts their own care routine
Start with the garment's care label and any product-specific instructions. For direct-to-garment prints, Printful recommends a cold, gentle wash with the shirt inside out, similar colors, and mild detergent. Skip fabric softener and dry cleaning. Hang the shirt to dry, or use a low tumble setting if the garment instructions allow it. Keep an iron away from the printed area. Look at the outfit as a whole
If you usually wear a tee under a hoodie, compare the layers together. A comfortable shirt on its own may feel different beneath a closer-fitting layer. Check the collar, sleeve opening, and hem placement in the combination you will actually wear.
